Training in a Canadian Garage Gym: Winter Edition

1 min read

Canadian winters are brutal, but that doesn't mean your training has to stop. With the right preparation, your garage gym can be a year-round training facility.

Heating Your Garage Gym

You don't need to heat it to room temperature—just enough to take the edge off:

  • Portable propane heaters: Quick heat, but need ventilation
  • Electric space heaters: Safer, but higher electricity costs
  • Infrared heaters: Heat you, not the air—very efficient
  • Mini-split systems: Best long-term solution if budget allows

Warm-Up is Non-Negotiable

In cold conditions, your warm-up needs to be longer and more thorough:

  1. 5-10 minutes of light cardio (jumping jacks, jump rope)
  2. Dynamic stretching for all major muscle groups
  3. Empty bar warm-up sets before adding weight

Equipment Care in Cold Weather

Steel and rubber behave differently in extreme cold:

  • Barbells: Let them warm up before heavy lifts—cold steel is more brittle
  • Rubber plates: May become stiff; avoid dropping from height
  • Cables: Lubricate regularly to prevent stiffness
  • Leather: Belts and straps may crack—store inside when not in use

Embrace the Cold

There's something satisfying about training in tough conditions. Many lifters find they perform better in cooler temperatures once warmed up. Your garage gym is an advantage—use it.
