Suspension Trainer Guide: TRX vs Alternatives

(Updated Jun 15, 2025)

Suspension trainers turn your bodyweight into a complete gym. By adjusting your body angle relative to the anchor point, you can scale any exercise from beginner to elite difficulty—no weight changes needed. They're portable enough to travel with you, hang from any overhead anchor, and store in a drawer. For home gym owners, they fill gaps that barbells and dumbbells leave open, especially for core training and single-leg work.

TRX vs Budget Alternatives

TRX invented the category and remains the most recognized brand, but several alternatives offer comparable quality at lower prices.

  • TRX Pro 4
50-200 CAD. Premium build quality, best locking mechanism, extensive exercise library and app. The industry standard.
  • TRX Home 2
00-130 CAD. Slightly simpler construction than the Pro but same fundamental design. Best value from TRX.
  • Woss Military Trainer — $30-50 CAD. Excellent quality at a fraction of TRX's price. Simpler adjustment but equally functional.
  • Jungle Gym XT — $60-80 CAD. Independent handles allow exercises TRX can't do (like flyes with separate hand paths). Heavier duty webbing.

Mounting Options

How you anchor your suspension trainer affects convenience and exercise options.

  • Door anchor — Included with most trainers. Wedges over a closed door. Portable but limits exercises to pulling toward the door. Always use a solid-core door.
  • Pull-up bar mount — Loop the trainer over your pull-up bar. Versatile, permanent, no installation needed.
  • Ceiling mount — Bolted to a ceiling joist. Best stability and exercise freedom.
