Home Gym Cable Machine Options

(Updated Jun 15, 2025)

Cable machines fill a gap that free weights can't—they provide constant tension throughout the entire range of motion, allow infinite angle adjustments, and enable isolation exercises that are difficult or impossible with barbells and dumbbells. For a home gym, adding a cable system transforms your training options. The question is which type fits your space, budget, and goals.

Rack-Mounted Cable Attachments

The most space-efficient option is adding cables directly to your existing power rack. Many rack manufacturers sell bolt-on lat pulldown and low row attachments that mount to the rear uprights. These typically cost

50-400 and use standard weight plates you already own, eliminating the need for a separate weight stack.

  • Lat pulldown/low row combo — Mounts to the top and bottom of your rack.
50-300. Covers the two most important cable exercises.
  • Pulley tower attachment — A single adjustable pulley that moves up and down a track on your rack upright.
